Marqus Crushes His Return to the D-League...Obviously!

.. .. ..

Quoted in full from Mark Emmert of the DesMoines Register:

Marqus Blakely doesn’t have to dunk to thrill a basketball crowd

In his return to the Iowa Energy on Tuesday, Blakely showed off a new Mohawk hairdo and some surprising passing skills. His blind, behind-the-back bounce pass to a cutting Michael Tveidt was the highlight of a 121-103 victory over the Sioux Falls Skyforce before an announced crowd of 3,891 at Wells Fargo Arena.

“We were just adjusting throughout the game,” said Blakely, who led Iowa with six assists. “I saw that they were trying to throw another body at me, and another cutter would be wide open. So I just had that in the back of my mind.”

Blakely played 24 games with Iowa last season, then was signed during the team’s championship playoff run by the Houston Rockets. After a summer spent working out and waiting for the NBA lockout to end, he went to training camp with the Rockets but was cut and became Energy property again Monday.

His new coach, Kevin Young, was immediately impressed.

“He has an unbelievable knack around the rim. He’s a tough cover because he’s so mobile,” Young said of Blakely, who also had 22 points and seven rebounds in 37 minutes of play.

“I didn’t realize he was such a good passer. That’s something we’ll look to utilize more with him.”
